According to Microsoft Watch, Vole wants its typical Longhorn computer to have a dual-core CPU running at 4-6GHz with at least two gigs of RAM, a terabyte of storage, a 1 Gbit built-in Ethernet-wired port and an 802.11g wireless link.
It should also have a graphics processor that runs three times faster than those on the market today.
While Vole spinners would not comment on Microsoft Watch’s questions on future specs, sources say that the industry has plenty of time to come up with the hardware to fit Longhorn. The last missive from Vole supremo Bill Gates indicated that Longhorn might be two years away, although we could see a Beta by the end of this year.
Ich frage mich ernsthaft, was könnte ein Betriebssystem können, das solche Voraussetzunge in der Hardware erforderlich machen würde? Ich dachte immer ein Betriebssystem sollte eine Plattform zur Verfügung stellen, welche es Anwendungen ermöglicht zu laufen. Ich bezweifle daß selbst in 2 Jahren Zukunft die Rechner so weit sind, daß neben den Anforderungen von Longhorn noch Ressourcen übrig sind für Anwendungen ;O)...
Ich freue mich schon darauf, wenn ich für die Serverversion reihenweise DirectX9 Grafikkarten in die Server schrauben müsste (*Scherz*).
Als kleine Randbemerkung: Es ist heute durchaus möglich das aktuellste Betriebssystem auf einem 2 Jahre alten Rechner laufen zu lassen, sogar auf älteren. Ich gehe jetzt mal von der leistungsfähigsten Workstation aus, auf welche ich in meinem Umfeld kenne:

4GB Arbeitsspeicher
3x38GB SCSI HDD Raid5
ATI FireGL
GB-Ethernet
Longhorntauglich: Nö!
