beim Abarbeiten der Installation von SP2 auf mein XP Prof erhalte ich:
"SP2 Setup-Fehler
Es konnte weder in die Datenbank geschrieben noch aus ihr gelesen werden"
"Installation von SP2 wurde nicht abgeschlossen"
UND NU???

Hast Du eine präzise Fehlermeldung?
Gibt es Fehlermeldungen in der Ereignisanzeige?
Wann genau tritt der Fehler auf - schon beim entpacken oder erst beim Installieren?

Erstmal Danke!
Die Fehlermeldung ist exakt so, wie ich sie beschrieben habe - also keine Nummer oder so was.
Sie taucht erst beim Beginn der Installation auf, die Routine davor läuft glatt durch (entpacken, Deinst-Ordner anlegen,System aktualisieren,Prod-Key untersuchen,Dateien sichern, Reg sichern, Wdh-Punkt erstellen (wird auch erstellt!),erst dann tauchen nacheinander die beiden Fenster auf.
Falls mit "Datenbank" die Reg gemeint ist - ich habe probeweise importieren und exportieren können.
Es sind auch bisher alle Sicherheitsupdates installiert worden.
Die SP2-CD hat auch keinen Fehler

so wie es immer ist wenn das sp2 probs macht. XP neuibstallieren.
Selbst wenn du das system inbekommen würdest wäre es immernoch irgendwo kaputt und da der wurm drin.
Wenn du das absolut vermeiden willst, wvon ich abrate, dann jage mal regclean und jv16 powertools drüber. Ob das funzt ist allerdings auch ungewiss. Ferner bitte die temp ordner (alle, auch die unter benutzer) leermachen

Das Problem und seine Lösung ist in der Datei "WxSP2.htm" wie folgt beschrieben:

Some of the possible error messages are:
Cryptographic service error
Error 0x800710D9 Unable to read from or write to the database
The quickest and most thorough way to solve this problem is a batch file, written by fellow MVP Torgeir Bakken from Norway. Reboot the computer and, before running any other program, run the batch file. It will tell you when it is finished. Here it is: fixdb.bat

The most successful workaround for the cryptographic service error has been the method 3 mentioned in that article:
Rename the Catroot2 folder, and then try to install the program again. To rename the Catroot2 folder, follow these steps:
Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type cmd, and then click OK.
At the command prompt, type the following commands, pressing ENTER after each line:
net stop cryptsvc
ren %systemroot%System32Catroot2 catroot2old
net start cryptsvc
exit
Important: Do not rename the Catroot folder. The Catroot2 folder is automatically recreated by Windows, but the Catroot folder is not recreated if it is renamed.
For the "Error 0x800710D9 Unable to read from or write to the database" you would need to delete or rename the %systemroot%Security*.log files as well (rename them to e.g. *.log.old).
Das erwähnte Skript "fixdb.bat" kann von folgendem Link geholt werden:

(Achtung: nach dem Ausführen des bat-Files XP neu starten und dann das SP2 wieder ausführen.

der tipp mit fixdb.bat war DIE Lösung für Error 0x800710D9 ("Unable to readfrom or write to the database").
